Kinds of Financial Aid

SCHOLARSHIPS


RANGE: $1,500-Full Tuition. Awarded for academic excellence, transfer students, out of state students, merit and athletics. General academic scholarships - complete FAFSA. Private scholarships - complete online scholarship application. There are local and national scholarships too; talk to your guidance counselor for details.

LOANS


RANGE: Up to $5,500 or $9,500 a year - both subsidized and unsubsidized. Subsidized - the federal government pays all interest until you are out of college. Unsubsidized - interest begins accruing immediately, but you do not need to make payments until after you have graduated. Complete the FAFSA to qualify.

GRANTS


RANGE: Up to $12,095/yr. Grants are awarded for financial need and for ability with federal and institutional grants available. At SVSU, we offer the Saginaw Valley Opportunity Grant (SVOG), which promises up to $6,000 for residential students and $5,000 for non-residential students in need-based aid, as determined by the FAFSA, including any university academic scholarships. SVOG is available for all first-time incoming college students, renewable for four years.

EMPLOYMENT


HOURLY RATE: Variable. Work study programs and student employment (for research, tutoring, teaching, etc.) help offset all your college costs. You must fill out a FAFSA to qualify for a work study program.
